The Roadhouse Report – April 2024
Excerpt…Prólogos It was a beautiful morning, a sky no bluer than the sea, a soft breeze keeping the biting flies off as she laid another bunch of dark, red grapes gently in the basket at her feet. She picked one and ate it and felt the small, sweet burst of flavor fill her mouth, always with that aftertaste of tartness that gave her village’s wine its reputation. She stood up, seeing the stooping figures of the rest of the girls filling their own baskets. Her best friend, Sophronia, winked at her and she grinned back. “Ranny!” Ranny looked up to see Pipi waving from the edge of the vineyard, where the grapes grew closest to the edge of the cliff. She shook her head and bent over to pick up her basket. “No! Leave it! Come see, Ranny! Now!” She looked up sharply at the urgency she heard in her little sister’s voice. She left the basket, full of grapes warm from the sun, hiked up her tunic and set off up the path between the vines at a trot. She arrived at her sister’s side and followed the pointing finger with her gaze. Her heart gave a single bound in her breast and then seemed to stop beating altogether. A ship with a faded sail and steadily beating oars was taking advantage of a combination of the incoming tide and an onshore breeze. Its sides were lined with men in mismatched apparel armed with swords and clubs. Pipi looked from the ship to her older sister, her expression fearful. “Ranny?” Ranny tore her eyes from the sea to her sister and bent over, grasping her sister’s shoulders tightly in her hands. “Run, Pipi! Run as fast as ever you can to the fields! Tell the men to come at once! Tell them—tell them pirates have come into the cove!” She stood up and turned her sister around and gave her a shove. Pipi stumbled a few steps and turned to look up at her. “But—what about Mother? And Auntie? And Grandmother? And the babies?” “I’ll warn them! Go!” She gave Pipi another shove, harder this time, so that she nearly fell. “RUN!” KatelandiaAbove please find a photograph of the Czech edition of Midnight Come Again, the 10th Kate Shugak novel. Nice, eh? Thank you, Mystery Press! Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Abduction of a Slave (see above) is done and waiting on my beta reader, I have nearly completed the Harvey Girls series proposal (see below), after which on to an outline for Kate24. Oh, and a title, there’s that, too. My plan is to skim through the first 23 novels in the series as a refresher course in Katelandia. After all, lately I’ve been hanging out in 47 BC Alexandria and the Wild West in the 1890s; I’m in danger of forgetting what millennia and which hemisphere I’m writing in. Who are the aunties, again? #joking #maybenot news of the Harvey Girls seriesYay, progress on all fronts! I know who my hero is, I know who her parents were (which is more than she does), I know which decade the books will be set in, I know what her real job is (which is more than anyone else does) and I’m still mining nuggets of pure gold research, like she’ll be a contemporary of Butch Cassidy. He was quite the lady’s man, so… (That’s La Posada above, the Fred Harvey hotel in Winslow, Arizona. They have a wonderful little bookshop where I found Stephen Fried’s Appetite for America which introduced me to the Harvey Girls. No going back after that.) If for some weird reason you want to find me online…Mostly I’m on Facebook, link below. Lately I’ve been getting a kick out of posting music videos on Fridays tagged "Let’s get this Friday started!" Believe me or believe me not, I’d forgotten Taylor Swift was dropping her new album the day I posted that NPR Tiny Desk concert of hers. It’s terrific, especially that first song she talks about taking a jillion years to write. Worth the wait.
In Storyknife news, you folks picked up my Founder’s Match gauntlet and how! We raised $10,244 in April, more than enough to match my $6500 challenge. Don’t forget, that amount represents one Fellowship and one Travel Scholarship, $5500 and $1000 respectively, so you have made two writers very happy and have helped two more get here, plus given us a good start on more of both. (And if you missed the memo, donate here, and thanks again!) |
