I’ve been a bit distracted at work lately, what with all the pterodactyl, oh I’m sorry, of course I meant sandhill crane activity going on outside my office door.
On behalf of Storyknife writers past, present and future, thank you all so much
Barbara Peters of the Poisoned Pen called and asked how HG2 (The Iron Trail) is going. I told her I was still toiling up the mountain and that it would be probably another month before I got to the top to become mistress of all I survey. Although I have reached the point in mid-slog where ideas start attacking, which results in sticky notes on my nightstand, my bathroom mirror, the kitchen counter, and occasionally the console of my car (I do pull off the road before I write those). Eventually they are collected into a pile next to my laptop, thereafter to be incorporated into the manuscript. They make me smile, because it’s the muse tapping me on the shoulder to say things like, "You didn’t know this when you wrote the outline, but Clare saw [redacted] from the top of the mesa." The experience always feels kind of — magical? And is always welcome.
