Fabulous. (h/t BarbaraP)

Photo I took from the plane coming into Amsterdam on May 9.

The EU is in the midst of finalizing a plan to completely end imports of Russian fossil fuels; the European Commission first pledged to quit Russian fossil fuels in 2022 as a response to Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine. The imports won’t completely end until 2027, but in the meantime, Czechia has achieved full independence from Russian oil for the first time in its history; the country now receives no supplies through Russia’s Druzhba pipeline, ending a 60-year dependency. This is significant because Czechia previously received half its oil from Russia and had an EU exemption from the 2022 Russian oil ban. —Fix the News, May 2, 2025

The funniest narration of a video I’ve ever heard. I have such writer envy. (h/t Laughing Squid)

Been there, seen that, had no idea it was that long. (from Brilliant Maps)

Hedwig! (h/t Kottke)

Quote for the day:

“When I once asked her what was the most important historical event in her lifetime, this woman who had lived through the Depression and both world wars answered without hesitation: “the washing machine.” –a wonderful Mother’s Day post from Heather Cox Richardson

Outro…

From one of those rare perfect albums. I think of my father every time I hear this song.
