As part of our election coverage, we send questions to candidates and compile the answers in a handy candidate comparison tool.

This year, the voter guide is a collaboration of four media organizations: Alaska Public Media, the Anchorage Daily News, the Alaska Beacon and Juneau public radio station KTOO. We’ve done similar things in prior elections.

But this time, something unusual happened: U.S. Sen. Dan Sullivan and Congressman Nick Begich, both Republicans, did not send answers. 

One of the candidates who filled out our questionnaire is Bill Hill, an independent challenging Begich for U.S. House. He said providing answers shouldn’t be a political risk calculation.

“I mean, if Alaskans are going to be voting for people, they deserve to know where they stand on things,” he said. “And, you know, if you are afraid to put in black and white where you stand, then maybe you shouldn’t be serving Alaskans.”

Maybe you shouldn’t. I haven’t heard Bill speak in person yet but I’m already trending in his direction.
