I took this panorama standing on top of a dune at the far end of the loop that goes into White Sands National Park. It is one of the most extraordinary places I’ve ever been and I wished I’d brought one of those big green trash bags with me. Read on.
You know that cheap sugar you get in packets at hotel breakfasts? This stuff is even finer than that.

It’s more powdery than North Slope white out snow. People bring their kids out here and rent flying saucers and snowboards at the Park’s visitors center to go sliding. They pitch beach umbrellas and spread beach towels on the tops of dunes and they don’t ever take their sunglasses off because the glare of the sun on the sand actually hurts your eyes.
This is where the sand comes from:

And in case you’re wondering what could live in that…

The wind blows the surface of the sand into graceful patterns.

Perfect for selfies.

The National Park Service is the best thing we’ve ever done as a nation.

That place must be incredible in person. I have been to the Sand Dunes near Alamosa, Colorado and it is interesting. But White Sands is awesome!
An absolutely fantastic place; we were lucky enough to score one of the walk-in camping spots for a night a few years ago. Just wow.
We were speechless.
Oh, thank you for sharing this! Was never able to visit White Sands. how interesting.
If you can, go. It is otherworldly.
