An intro to a series of four essays in The New Atlantic called “We Live Like Royalty and Don’t Know It.” Quote: ” But despite [Jefferson’s] wealth and status his home was so cold in winter that the ink in his pen sometimes froze, making it difficult for him to write to complain about the chill.” Click through the image above to read the whole piece. An exercise in perspective. (h/t The Best of Journalism)

Lately life has felt like it’s moving in fast forward so this seems appropriate. (h/t 1440 Daily Digest)

Quote: “Your enjoyment of a trip will be inversely related to the weight of your luggage. Counterintuitively, the longer your trip, the less stuff you should haul. Travelers still happy on a 6-week trip will only have carry-on luggage.” Click through the image above to read the whole list. (h/t John Naughton)

Ilona Andrews writes about Amazon doing away with your ability to download Kindle ebooks to a USB device. Quote: “Some people back up their books to a USB device, meaning they download those files to a storage drive or a USB stick. A loose equivalent would be buying a movie on Amazon and burning it onto a DVD to keep. Amazon is doing away with that ability. It goes away on February 25th.” Click through the image above to read the whole piece–useful, sane, and a teaser for their new book at the end. Now that’s #thiswritinglife.

From Ann Telnaes’ “The shameful legacy of Sen. Mitch McConnell.” Click through the image above to see the entire cartoon. She’s already won a Pulitzer but she should get another one for this.

Quote for today:

“Some people worry that artificial intelligence will make us feel inferior, but then, anybody in his right mind should have an inferiority complex every time he looks at a flower.”–Alan Kay
