Wouldn’t it be nice if you knew when that incoming check was dropping in your PO box or coming to your house? Wouldn’t it be nice if you could keep track of that package of smoked salmon you mailed to your friend in Arizona right up until the moment it was delivered? Sounds like a good idea. Somebody should get right on that.
It turns out someone already has. That someone is the the US Postal Service, and it’s called Informed Delivery.
Log in to your USPS account. (Don’t have one? Create one right here.)
Click on Informed Delivery at top right and sign up.
The USPS will send you an email every day alerting you to incoming mail. Much of the time they’ll even include scans of incoming letters so you know exactly what’s on the way and whether it’s worth the drive into town to pick up your mail.
In the Search or Track Packages window, you can enter tracking numbers of mail you’ve sent, printed on the receipt the clerk gave you, so you’ll know when it arrives at its destination. You can enter the tracking numbers for stuff that has been mailed to you, too, so you know where it is every step of the way and when it will show up.
There’s a reason they named it Informed Delivery. It’ll keep you informed of almost every piece of mail coming your way.
A useful way to keep track of your vote-by-mail ballot, too.
This is a great service, especially if you travel. (When we can travel again, that is…..).
