reporting in from Storyknife

It turns out that life really is what happens while you’re making other plans.

We were all set to welcome our first residents to Storyknife Writers Retreat today, and then…well, you know what happened then. We have canceled residencies for April and May and we’re re-assessing on a month-by-month basis, pretty much like everyone else in the world.

Our executive director, Erin Hollowell, and our chef, Maura Brenin, are continuing work on completing the furnishings, hanging the art, and setting up the kitchen. When the first writers do arrive, Storyknife will be waiting with open arms.

In that spirit, Erin took this photo of one of our garden beds on March 27th. You can’t keep a good spring down.

In the meantime, everyone, wash your hands and stay home as much as you can. Together, and only together, we can and will get through this.

Go here to read an article about Storyknife written by Erin that was published in the Alaska Humanities Forum magazine’s Winter 2020 issue. Thank you, AHF!

Here is a video of Katherine Gottlieb, a member of the Storyknife board. She visited during construction last year but this is the first time she’s seen it finished. I’ll let you decide if she was impressed.

Donate. Now that we’re in business, help keep us there.

*Sponsor a Storyknife Fellowship. Donate $5,000 to support one Storyknife resident for one year. You may name your Fellowship and the genre your fellow writes in, and we ask that you commit to a minimum of three years. I myself am sponsoring the Joan Perry Barnes Fellowship in Crime Fiction in honor of my mom. Our executive director, Erin Hollowell, will be happy to talk to you about your fellowship at ehollowell@storyknife.org.

*Sponsor a bench or a garden spot along the trail and name it for your favorite person. Our executive director, Erin Hollowell, will be happy to talk to you about it at ehollowell@storyknife.org.

*We welcome donations of appreciated stock. Our executive director, Erin Hollowell, will be happy to talk to you about it at ehollowell@storyknife.org.

*This year we’ll have an endowment fund ready to accept all of the above as well as testamentary donations. We plan on a ten-year fundraising campaign for the endowment, for a minimum goal of $5 million.

Thank you, Friends of Storyknife!
