In Death of an Eye news…
…yesterday Barbara and I baked Egyptian Christmas cookies for my signing at the Poisoned Pen on Saturday. With limited success. These are the best of the ankh, the Eye of Horus, and the scarab. (I told Barbara some of the ankhs looked like Casper the Friendly Ghost. Upon reflection, I think I meant dementors.)
I was at the store yesterday and Julie (remember Julie, who found the dragon on the spine of Silk and Song?) said, “Oh, and look at these!” It seems the printer forgot a couple of layers of print and gilt on some of the copies of Death of an Eye. At least the Washington Post still thinks I’m “Outstanding!” And the Danamaniacs, living up to their name, have decided they all want the deformed ones.
I have goodies to give away at the event, too. In order below, that’s an Eye of Horus key fob
three Evil Eyes
a pair of uraeus earrings
Apollodorus’ wrist guards (which in the book are what we in the biz call A Clue)
and a Death of an Eye mug. #wellofcourse #haveyoumetme
Lastly, I’m the Hot Book of the Week at the Poisoned Pen! Woohoo!

Congratulations, it’s going to be a great event. By the by, in my humble opinion, they’re not deformed – they’re minimalistic, rare and even more valuable! I just love those blues…
I like “minimalistic.” Imma gonna go with that. [grin]

Dana, I am really excited about your new book, however I need the akludio, please tell me this is in the works. I can’t wait. I listened to Less Than a Treason for the umpteenth time yesterday, I love your books and I have all of them in one form or another. Thank you. Marjorie Stephens
My agent is agitating for audio rights, Marjorie, but as an unknown first in series it may take a while.
Cleopatra and the Earthworms
I LOVED Death of an Eye. My ancestors came from Alexandria and I was thrilled that you brought to life that ancient cultural melting pot.
This fascinating tidbit appeared in the Spring Issue of Yes! Magazine, a Journal of Positive Futures. Had to share it with you! Possibly it may enrich an upcoming book in the Cleopatra series!
“We can trace Black people’s sacred relationship with soil back at least to the reign of Cleopatra in Egypt beginning in 51 BCE. Recognizing the earthworm’s contributions to the fertility of Egyptian soil, Cleopatra declared the animal sacred and decreed that no one, not even a farmer, was allowed to harm or remove an earthworm for fear of offending the deity of fertility. According to studies referenced by Jerry Minnich in The Earthworm Book in 1977, worms of the Nile River Valley were largely responsible for the extraordinary fertility of Egyptian soils.” Leah Penniman, By Reconnecting With Soil, We Heal the Planet and Ourselves
That IS a great little nugget of information, Lindianne, thank you! You bet I’ll try to work that into an Eye book going forward. And I’m delighted to hear you enjoyed it. It was so much fun to write, that time being so staggering in its parallels with the present day. I can’t wait to get to work on the next one.
