Good Reads on Coffee Table this morning

kbbi_logo_3x6

Following are all of the books we talked about on Coffee Table this morning:

Kathleen is on a locavore (localege, maybe?) spree lately–

Island of the Blue Foxes by Stephen R. Brown (Kathleen and I agree, it takes a pretty gutsy author to cover the same ground so superbly written about by Corey Ford in Where the Sea Breaks its Back)
Ocean in my Ears by Megan Macvie
The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah
Steam Laundry by Nicole Stellon O’Donnell
Every Atom by Erin Hollowell
Ph by Nancy Lord

and she opened on the air an ARC she got from the Homer Bookstore‘s Blind Date With a Book–The Girls in the Picture by Melanie Benjamin.

Terry caused heart palpitations by recommending two works of fiction

All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr
The Stupidest Angel by Christopher Moore

before he got back to normal with the nonfiction (although no Churchill!)

Cleopatra by Stacy Schiff
Friends Divided by Gordon S. Wood (about John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, a difficult read, he says, but worthwhile)
The Art of Power by Jon Meacham (Terry danced around saying it was an easy read, until I told him there was nothing inherently evil in being an easy read)

Larry called in to recommend

Every Atom by Erin Hollowell and all her previous work, too
The Divide: Global Inequality from Conquest to Free Markets by Jason Hickel
Wampum: How Indian Tribes, the Mafia, and an Inattentive Congress Invented Indian Gaming and Created a $28 Billion Gambling Empire by Don Mitchell
The Great Explorers: The European Discovery of America by Samuel Eliot Morrison
The Secret Voyage of Sir Francis Drake by Samuel Bawlf (I had no idea it was thought by some that Cook Inlet ought to be named Drake Inlet!)

Mary Lou called in to recommend

the Homer Public Library‘s plant and book sale this weekend–
FHL Members, Friday, April 20, 6:00 – 8:00 pm
General Public, Saturday, April 21, 10:00 am – 6:00 pm

and Radio Free Vermont by Bill McKibben (which had me at the title).

My recommendations were:

The Miracle of Dunkirk by Walter Lord (I saw the film Dunkirk and I wanted more information on the event. This book reads like a thriller, I was on the edge of my seat, literally, the whole time I was reading it.)
Cinnamon and Gunpowder by Eli Brown (an adventure novel, a history lesson,  a love story, a cook book, and the entrance of Mabbot the pirate is one worthy of Darth Vader)
Her Right Foot by Dave Eggers
5,000 Awesome Facts, National Geographic
The Book With No Pictures by BJ Novak (the only kid’s book I’ve ever found that makes the narrator part of the story)
Police at the Station and They Don’t Look Friendly by Adrian McKinty (Sixth in a noir crime series set in Northern Ireland in the early ’80s, the time of the Troubles)
Light it Up by Nick Petrie (third in the Peter Ash series. Peter’s the veteran with claustrophobia who this time is working security for a marijuana grow in California. The shipment he is guarding gets robbed and everyone is killed except Peter. It proves to be the last mistake the robbers ever make.)
Marko Kloos’ Frontline series (Superior military S/F with great characters and a recognizable future Earth, and boy are we in trouble)

  1. Excellent list of books Dana. I very much love the audio reading of the Adrian McKinty’s Sean Duffy series. Awesome. And what a great character.
Thanks for posting this list. It always helps me find new authors and new series to read.(when I get time. I am typing in Blood Will Tell now in our current project). Just finishing listening to and make notes to Less than a Treason.

  2. I really enjoyed meeting Nick Petrie at the Tucson Festival of Books…super nice guy and I love his books. I sure wish you would come some year…:) Maureen
