reporting in from Storyknife

Hello from quarantine! I hope you and yours are well and working hard at staying that way. Me, too.

Here at Storyknife Writers Retreat all those beautiful gardens Rita Jo Shoultz planted for us last year are pushing up green shoots. Two cow moose have been browsing the property, both fat with calf. Pairs of eagles soar in front of the windows, on the hunt for anything that doesn’t get out of the way first, at least until the salmon hit fresh water. The pond has thawed. We’ve had a week of clear skies and all the mountains have been out every day.

It’s hard to find a bad view anywhere in Alaska, but the view from Storyknife does set the bar pretty high. We look forward to sharing it with our first residents.

The Kachemak Bay Quilters have finished the quilts they made for each of the cabins and Patrice and Rick Krant hung them on April 16th. Here’s a short video I made that day for the sponsor of Diana Cabin.

I don’t know what will prove more inspiring for our writers in residence–the view or the quilts.

Thank you all for being part of the Storyknife community!

Donate. Now that we’re in business, help keep us there.

*Sponsor a Storyknife Fellowship. Donate $5,000 to support one Storyknife resident for one year. You may name your Fellowship and the genre your fellow writes in, and we ask that you commit to a minimum of three years. I myself am sponsoring the Joan Perry Barnes Fellowship in Crime Fiction in honor of my mom. Our executive director, Erin Hollowell, will be happy to talk to you about your fellowship at ehollowell@storyknife.org.

*Sponsor a bench or a garden spot along the trail and name it for your favorite person. Our executive director, Erin Hollowell, will be happy to talk to you about it at ehollowell@storyknife.org.

*We welcome donations of appreciated stock. Our executive director, Erin Hollowell, will be happy to talk to you about it at ehollowell@storyknife.org.

*Storyknife now has an endowment fund at the Homer Foundation. We plan on a ten-year fundraising campaign for a minimum goal of $5 million, which should provide an annual earned income large enough to meet our annual operating expenses. Click here and select “Storyknife Writers Retreat Agency Endowment Fund” from the “My donation is for” drop-down menu to donate to the endowment fund in cash. We also welcome donations of appreciated stock, testamentary donations, and real property.

Thank you, Friends of Storyknife!
