I was on KBBI this morning, talking about good summer reads with host Aaron Selbig. Here’s the list of all the books mentioned on the air, by us and everyone who called in:

Tessa recommends To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, which she says she rereads every year.

Bill recommends Clive Cussler’s The Mediterranean Caper and Louis L’Amour’s Sackett series. Also, his son gave him a Kindle for Christmas last year and he loves it.

Dave strongly recommends Baseball and the Garden of Eden by John Thorne, which he says is much more than a book about baseball and that people who aren’t into sports will love it, too. He convinced me, it’s on my to-read list now.

Garnet just finished For Whom the Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway, but really wanted to recommend C.S. Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia series and Terry Goodkind’s Confessor series.

Janet and Jenny both said they were unable to put down The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot.

Jenny also highly recommends The Disappearing Spoon by Sam Kean.

Larry loved The Help by Kathryn Stockett.

Amy recommends Ahab’s Wife by Sena Jeter Naslund.

Michael recommends Matterhorn by Karl Marlantes, “a Vietnam war novel that reads like a 200-page thriller.”

Historical fiction: Birds Without Wings by Louis de Bernieres

Urban fantasy: Jim Butcher’s Harry Dresden series. The thirteenth novel, Ghost, will be out next month.

Epic fantasy: George R.R. Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire series. The fifth novel comes out next month, A Dance With Dragons.

Crime fiction: Craig Johnson’s Walt Longmire series, beginning with The Cold Dish, and Don Winslow’s two cowboys-on-surfboards novels, The Dawn Patrol and The Gentlemen’s Hour.

Science fiction: David Weber and John Ringo’s Prince Roger series, beginning with March Upcountry.

Children’s picture books: Anything by David Wiesner, but most recently Art & Max.

Juvenile fiction: Tamora Pierce’s Protector of the Small Quartet, wonderful series about Keladry of Mindelan, a girl who wants to be a knight.

Alaska books: Good-time Girls by Lael Morgan (see also The Singing of the Dead, the eleventh Kate Shugak novel) and Alaska Wilderness Medicines by Eleanor Viereck.
